Church Folk
By Michele Andrea Bowen
Walk Worthy Press,
ISBN 0-446-67887-2 PB
Author,
Michele Andrea Bowen, brings the personalities of preachers,
parishioners, and others to life in the best selling novel, Church Folk. Combining romance,
religion, scandal, and adventure in an often hilarious tone, Bowen
gives readers an accurate portrait of Black church life in the 1960's
during the height of the Civil Rights era.
Church Folk is the story of Reverend Theophilus Simmons and
feisty waitress soon-to-be first lady, Essie Lane. Theophilus and Essie
have a loving and passionate relationship, however circumstances and
people will stop at nothing to tear them apart. In addition to
encounters with self-righteous church members, Essie also has to
contend with Glodean Benson, a sneaky, conniving woman from Theophilus'
past. Meanwhile, Theophilus discovers some of the preachers in his
denomination have created a fire that threatens to ignite into a
full-blown scandal.
Church Folk, racy
yet realistic, is rewarding for both men and women looking for a good
page-turner. The novel not only demonstrates how God's
people can overcome anything the enemy sends to destroy harmony within
the church, but this book also encourages Christians to stand for
righteousness in spite of the hypocrisy that sometimes plagues and
threatens to weaken the church body.
Church Folk and Bowen's current novel, Second Sunday, are available
everywhere.
